The highly competitive grants of the European Research Council (ERC) are aimed at outstanding researchers of all ages, sexes and nationalities. Scientific excellence is the only evaluation criterion.
Starting Grants and Consolidator Grants assist the best starting researchers with excellent ideas to make the transition to independence by providing adequate support at the critical stage when they are setting up or consolidating their own research team or programme.
The MSCA (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions) enable cross-border mobility and thus support researchers at all stages of their careers. Swiss institutions can only participate as the so-called “outgoing hosts” for Global Fellowships.
Advanced Grants support outstanding and established research leaders to further expand their work.
A transitional arrangement enables Swiss researchers to participate in the ERC call for Advanced Grants 2024. Due to progress in the negotiations the EU has furthermore decided that researchers in Switzerland can participate as 'beneficiaries' in the ERC Starting Grant 2025, ERC Synergy Grant 2025, ERC Consolidator Grant 2025 and ERC Proof of Concept Grant 2025 calls. This is the first time in three years that researchers in Switzerland can take part in these important calls.
Switzerland was excluded from important areas of Horizon Europe in June 2021. Since fall 2021, the SNSF has launched its own SNSF Starting Grants, SNSF Consolidator Grants and SNSF Advanced Grants on behalf of the federal government as a transitional measure. Now that Swiss researchers have regained access to the ERC grants mentioned above, the SNSF will no longer launch corresponding calls for proposals in 2025. Existing SNSF grants from previous program years will be continued. Furthermore the SNSF has once again launch its own funding scheme for early-career researchers who have already distinguished themselves through outstanding research work: the SNSF Starting Grant.
