ERC Starting Grants 2026: 10 projects at UZH

The ERC is funding 10 Starting Grants at UZH.

The 2026 ERC Starting Grants grants, totaling € 705 million, will support 421 early-career researchers across Europe. The funding will enable early-career researchers to work independently and take on leadership roles in research.

10 of these grants have been awarded to researchers at UZH:

  • Dr. Morris Brooks (Department of Mathematics, MNF): Effective Theories in High-Dimensional Quantum and Probabilistic Systems
  • Dr. Ana Costa-Ramon (Department of Economics, WWF): Safeguarding Childhood: Bullying, Online Risks, and Human Capital Formation
  • Prof. Dr. Nina Hartrampf (Department of Chemistry, MNF): Lasso Peptides as Versatile Scaffolds for Peptide Engineering
  • Dr. Emma Hoes (Department of Political Science, PhF): The Hidden Politics of Everyday Media: A New Framework for Political Learning
  • Dr. Diego Känzig (Department of Economics, WWF): The Macroeconomics of Climate Change: Quantifying Physical and Transition Risks
  • Prof. Dr. Christoph Kehle (Department of Mathematics, MNF): Criticality and Instability of Black Hole Spacetimes
  • Dr. Sarah Mundt (Department of Experimental Immunology, MeF): Resolving Niche-to-Monocyte Crosstalk in Neuroinflammatory Disease
  • Dr. Pascale Zwicky (Institute of Anatomy, MeF): Causal Mapping of Immune Exclusion and Infiltration in Cancer

​​​​​​​Two additional grants secured by researchers who were employed at UZH at the time of the application will be transferred to other higher education institutions:

  • Dr. Isabel Raabe (Department of Sociology, PhF): Blending Online and Offline Social Ties: How Digital and In-Person Social Processes in Peer-Family-Embedded Networks Shape Educational Inequalities
  • Dr. Vakil Takhaveev (Institute of Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, VSF): Error or Program? Resolving the Mechanisms of Ageing via High-Resolution Cross-Species Mapping of Major DNA-Damage Types
