Management of third-party funds on leaving the university or on retirement

The Office of the Vice President Research is responsible (as of 1 August 2020) for the extension and transfer of third-party funds in the event of leaving the university or retiring (according to FHB § 36).

In case of important reasons, project leaders who are about to retire have the option of applying for an extension of the right to use third-party funds.
Project leaders who leave the UZH have the option of applying for a transfer of the project to the new place of work ("third-party funds transfer").

According to the UZH Finance Handbook § 36 Para 1 project responsibility ends with the employment relationship. Para 2 specifies the transfer of project responsibility with the management of the respective area.

On occasion, especially for Swiss National Science Foundation projects, the Vice President Research can approve an application from the exiting project leader according to UZH Finance Handbook § 36 Para 3:

• Extension of the responsibility for the duration of the project or a maximum of three years. New funding may not be acquired. An extension of responsibility requires approval from the superiors in para. 2,

or

• Transfer of the project to the new institution. For this, the new place of work has to be equivalent to UZH regarding the acquisition and administration of third-party funds. In addition, written approval from the new place of work and the founder is required

Other exemptions require approval from the Executive Board of the University (Para 4).
