Title / Titel Cerebral hemodynamics during Wisconsin Card Sorting Test: neuropsychological and neurophysiological characterization

Summary / Zusammenfassung The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a well-known paradigm of abstraction and cognitive flexibility. We have shown that WCST elicits a distinct pattern of cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) changes as measured by Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD). Response latency (RL) increased during search of a new category (i.e. extradimensional shift) as compared to maintaining a rule (i.e. intradimensional shift). During repeated administration of this task, reduced response latencies over time were noted and interpreted as practice effect. Concomitantly, a slight decrease of CBFV was observed. Intra- and extradimensional shifts represent different cognitive processes. The aim of this project is to examine the association between different behavioural responses and cerebral hemodynamics. Further, we hypothesize that time has a differential effect on response latency during intra- and extradimensional shift across repeated WCST administrations. Emphasis is on the association of neurophysiological and neuropsychological variables.
